Mammography for Breast Cancer - Get The Facts!

Mammography for Breast Cancer - Get The Facts! Mammography saves lives. The American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, and Society of Breast Imaging all recommend that women at average risk for breast cancer receive annual mammograms starting at age 40, and at age 30 or earlier if you are at high-risk. If you are age 40+ and have not had an annual exam, ask your doctor about a digital screening mammogram at WRA.

Significant scientific evidence exists to prove that annual mammography saves lives. Yet in 2009, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force advised against annual mammograms for women in their 40s. These recommendations have been scientifically rejected by every major medical organization with demonstrated expertise in breast cancer care. Even the federal government has barred Medicare and private insurance companies from considering these recommendations when making coverage determinations for mammograms.

Please visit Mammography Saves Lives™ to learn why all women should begin getting annual mammograms at age 40. The September 2010 landmark study published online in Cancer confirms that mammography lowers the breast cancer death rate in women age 40-49 by nearly one-third.

Breast Care Navigator Program

Breast Care Navigator Program Washington Radiology Associates offers breast care navigators and coordinators at each of our Comprehensive Breast Center locations to help support patients who undergo a diagnostic evaluation for breast cancer.

These trained healthcare professionals are a central point of contact for scheduling follow-up exams, explaining diagnostic procedures, providing breast health information, identifying additional resources, and answering patient questions. As soon as a diagnosis is made, our staff will gather reports and images to make them available for surgical and oncology providers.

WRA offers Comprehensive Breast Centers at our diagnostic sites in Maryland, DC and Virginia. At each WRA office, you’ll find:

  • Knowledgeable, board-certified radiologists who specialize in breast imaging,
  • Radiologic technologists with mammography certification to perform your mammogram,
  • The most up to date digital mammography technology with Computer-Aided Detection,
  • Prompt access to breast ultrasound, dedicated breast MRI or minimally invasive breast biopsy if required.
