Leonard M. Glassman, MD, FACR, FAIUMRadiologist
Dr. Glassman is a nationally-recognized expert on breast disease and practicing radiologist at WRA since 1978. He is a clinical professor of radiology at George Washington University School of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honor given to just 100 radiologists a year in the U.S. from among more than 25,000 in clinical practice.
He holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College. He completed an internship at Temple University Health Sciences Center, and a residency in diagnostic radiology from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Glassman has been involved in breast imaging for over 35 years. He started his career working in a large multicenter trial called the Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Project in the 1970s. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, this project was recognized as one of the seminal studies to prove that mammography saved lives. He continued his career in breast ultrasound, was an early pioneer in the use of stereotactic breast core biopsy in the United States, and extensively lectures on breast MRI. During his tenure at Washington Radiology, he served as Chief of Radiology for Columbia Hospital for Women Medical Center for 14 years.
Dr. Glassman was the first to hold the position of American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Scientist, Department of Radiographic Pathology, with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). He also served as the AFIP Chief for Breast Radiology in the Department of Radiologic Pathology and is the former Chief of Breast Imaging at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology. He is a consultant and past-Chairman of the Radiological Devices Advisory Panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Dr. Glassman has authored or co-authored over 50 scientific articles, book chapters, abstracts and exhibitions on breast radiography and evaluation. Dr. Glassman is a prominent leader in radiology education and is an invited national and international lecturer having given more than 700 presentations on breast imaging.
