Cardiac Calcium Scoring CT
It's a Life-Saving Score
Calcium Scoring is one of the most frequently ordered cardiac screening exams at Washington Radiology. It is a quick study, only 10-minutes to perform, which uses CT imaging and advanced software to help assess the degree of calcification or 'plaque' in the coronary arteries.
This screening tool is available for individuals who don't have any symptoms of heart disease and are over the age of 55. Typically there is a risk factor that has been identified such as family history or hypertension.
With minimal preparation, the exam is performed and a score is calculated for each artery based on the calcium that may be present in the structure. There is a clinical association with future heart health and calcium scoring which is why this preventive screening study is frequently ordered by general internal medicine physicians.
A Calcium Scoring exam performed by a certified technologist and interpreted by a CT-specialized radiologist is a robust tool in assessing heart health. Regular screenings like coronary artery studies represent one of the many ways we’re making preventive exams easy, efficient and accessible to help our patients achieve and maintain optimal health.
